Mariel was "acting up" at the dinner table a while ago. Her punishment was "no TV and no computer games!" So, we ended up drawing at the kitchen table. Here is what I drew for her:

September Song (Swan Song?)

Here are a few of the hen-scratchings that were hatched at our kitchen table this past month. They're all doodles that were done to entertain my four year old daughter. The mediums used were pencil, water color, colored pencils and discarded copy paper.

Look! Veggie Tales, the whatzis and a genetically weird TeleTubby all on one page. I added the watercolors during one of Mariel's painting sessions.

Mr. Puppy and Mr. Other Puppy are in the lower left corner while Tiger and Kipper discuss taking medicine up top. Mariel had to take 10 days' worth of antibiotics this month, hence the dialog balloons. Bob the Tomato with Larry the Cucumber are shown in the lower right hand corner. Who is that in the center, I wonder..?

Gosh, August is darn near kaput and I haven't wasted any bandwidth on this 'chere blog!

At left, we have a little crayon doodle of a character I've decided to call "Whatzis" for obvious reasons.

I was intrigued to the point where I tried to draw him in several different poses. Each sketch seem to water down the spark that appealed to me in the first drawing, as is so often the case.

Still it afforded me an excuse to try drawing a character in different poses...

In the Father-Daughter Doodle category, Mariel drew the character on the left, below:

She determined that this character was named "Puffy," again, for obvious reasons!

Finally, here are some stomach-churning VeggieTales and "My Little Pony" sketches, drawn for Princess Mariel's amusement.

Here is a sheet of "Little Puppet Boy" doodles I did some time back. I had a sheet of paper by my computer and just scratched out thumbnails while waiting for downloads, talking on the phone or amusing Mariel.

Speaking of Mariel, here's a daddy-daughter drawing. The medium is crayon-on-ripped-construction-paper.

And, just to round things out, here's one of Mariel's cartoon characters. Blobby body, beady eyes and a large honker. Daddy likes!

SPUNKIES

One of Mariel's favorite cartoons has been one called "OKEY DOKEY DONKEY." This is a late fifties Paramount cartoon that features a donkey named Spunky. I think Spunky came into being as half of the Hunky & Spunky team in Max Fleischer's "Color Classics" series.

'Mariel doesn't care about that stuff. She just enjoys the cartoon.

One day, when we had the construction paper, glue stick, google eyes and craft jewels out, I cut out a horse. It was kind of an amalgam of Pokey and My Little Pony.

Mariel decided it was Spunky.

OK, so I made a donkey instead of a horse.

She had fun gluing on an eye and some jewels.

As four year olds will do, she asked me to make another one.

And another one.

And... you get the idea.

She had a big envelope full of these things.

Every so often she'll ask to "make some more the Spunkies!"

(Actually, she isn't "asking!")

Yep, the herd just keeps a-growin' and a-growin'...

Kris 'n' Victor

This is a rough series of sketches to try to map out an idea I've been playing with.

I was thinking of coming up with some li'l boy and girl comic characters. Their names are Kris & Victor. Their Mommy and Daddy are Mr. and Mrs. Church. My thought is to illustrate simple Sunday School lessons.

Why do we pray? What do the Ten Commandments mean? Stuff like that.

My long layoff from seriously trying to cartoon has really hurt my sense of construction and posing. I have still not mastered how to draw hands!

If I can get off the dime with this concept, I think this would be a rewarding (and fun) project. My life-long problem with cartooning has been that, while I like to draw, I don't know what to do with it!

(Note: The characters' names are a play on the name of the church we attend: Christus Victor Lutheran Church. Get it? Kris & Victor Church! Um...)

Oh, yeah! I mentioned "Spunkies" in the previous post. I'll explain later.

The Return of Father-Daughter Doodles

Oh yes, there has still been father-daughter doodling! We've been dabbling in many media: pencil, crayon, paints and even construction paper as you shall soon be seeing.

In the mean time, here are a couple of Mariel's cartoon character creations.

Technically, this is a mother-daughter doodle. Mariel drew this character and dubbed it "Fibber."

I'm not sure who this is. I'm hoping its Larry the Cucumber (From VeggieTales) rather than Mr. Hankey (South Park) but it couldgo either way, depending on how you color it in.

New PC & New Scanner!

Wow! Has it really been over six months since I posted anything here?

Well, I finally set up the printer/scanner with the emachines computer my Dad gave us two months ago.

The first father-daughter doodle I scanned is a team effort. It depicts Daddy's frustration at finding out the Dazzle USB A/V Port will not work with Windows Vista.

Now that I know I can scan stuff, I'll try to put more things here on a more regular basis.

Just be forewarned. My "serious" attempts at following the Preston Blair book have long since ended. All you will find here is random junk that may very well be a bigger than ever waste of your time.

Oh, How Life Intrudes

Folks, maintaining this blog is going to be next-to-impossible in the short-term.

Here's why.

As previously-mentioned, my home PC is dying and I have no access to a functioning scanner. My new job does NOT afford me access to either a scanner or the Internet, either.

My new schedule has eradicated those "Father-Daughter Days" as well. Oh, we'll still be drawing, but there will be fewer regularly-scheduled opportunities to do so. (The graphic posted here is a crude picture of Junior Asparagus (from Veggietales) done using the Windows "Paint" program, BTW.)

It will be a little easier to maintain my non-cartooning blog, HERE. If anyone misses me, just go there.

I'm hoping I'll be able to afford a new PC, scanner and IP once those larger paychecks start rolling in. We'll see.

This blog has been fun, and I've met lost of fun folks through it. I hope to be back here soon. I just don't know how soon!

What Next?

It was an amazingly doodle-free weekend that just ended.

The only thing I could muster was yet another drawing of The Little Puppet Boy, pictured, left. Mariel just didn't want to draw!

My old PC at home has been dying a long, slow death. Part of that death included no longer talking to my scanner. Yep, I've been scanning these drawings at work.

Since I'm starting a new job next Monday, my scanning capabilities will be in question unless I am able to get the discarded computer my buddy, Bill, gave me up and running.

I am going to try to make that happen this Thursday - the only "day off" I will have before the new gig kicks in.

I really appreciate that folks check out this blog and leave comments. As in, "really, really appreciate it!" I'm going to try to keep drawing, alone and with my daughter, so I can keep having fun with this. I hope you folks will check back, even if it goes dark here for a week or two.

What's With Popeye's Head?

I tried copying a drawing of Popeye from a late-era Fleischer model sheet. (Thanks to Kevin Langley for having posted it, BTW!)

This particular sheet came in for a lambasting from Shamus Culhane. His point was that the artist drew everything symmetrical and dead-looking.

Yeah, that's true, but I always figured it was the job of the model sheet to provide a "mechanical drawing" view of the character and it was the animator's job to pose the figure and breathe life into it. Too often, the only poses and expression found in cartoons are those on the model sheets.

All that aside, I made Popeye's cranium too big. Maybe the next one will be better..?

Oh, and here are more Father-Daughter doodles with more Puppet Boy and a cute little cat my daughter dubbed "Spider!"

At left are a few quick sketches I made of a hunter caveman taken from a 1940 "Stone Age Cartoon." This one was directed by James (Shamus) Culhane.

I thought to triangular head was pretty amusing and I wanted to try drawing this character.

Below, we have the latest Father-Daughter doodles.

Mariel was obsessed with the idea of Mister Puppy Puppet and Mister Other Puppy going to the store with The Little Puppet Boy.

Of course, the puppet boy invariably goes on a rage-fueled rampage and starts throwing things. In the first drawing they are at Toys 'R' Us and he's bouncing a toy sailboat off of Mister Puppy's noggin.
In this sketch, they're at WAL*MART and Puppet Boy is going berserk in the paper towel aisle.
Well, Puppet Boys will be Puppet Boys, I guess.

Aesops' Fables - Sound & Silent!

Still Workin' On It

WHEN YOU COPY, DRAW SLOWLY, CAREFULLY AND THINK

Yep, that's something I haven't been doing: drawing slowly, carefully and thoughtfully. My earlier lesson drawings were done at sub-snail speed, per this example...

I drew so slowly, that I'd get comments encouraging me to "work looser!" (You can see that my self-portrait was a lot less cute & cartoon-y, as well!)

Then, as my nightly drawing started to evaporate, I started hacking out drawings while I was eating breakfast.

Then, I just ended up doing those Father-Daughter doodles, which absolutely prohibits slow, deliberate drawing.

Bottom line: I'll have to slow myself down and work on my "lessons" when I can concentrate on them. I'll save the fast-n-furious stuff for Father-Daughter jam session.

In outlining the first-year courses for his ideal animation school, John Kricfalusi made the following statement:

We will learn classic cartoon construction in the same order that classic cartoonists learned it, starting with rubber hose construction and working our way towards sphere and pear construction.

To illustrate the "rubber hose" concept, he used a model sheet from the Ub Iwerks cartoon "Viva Willie."

More Mr. Puppy Puppet?

Man, this is getting embarrassing!

I had such high hopes for this blog, but perhaps its time has passed?

Even my Father-Daughter doodles are suffering these days.

Here are a few "Mr. Puppy Puppet" drawings I did for the young 'un and I feel they represent some sort of low water mark in my cartooning travails. It's been about a year and a half since I started this blog and the past nine months or so have seen regression , rather than progress.

Oh, I had hoped that maybe if I just kept trying to doodle something, anything, I could at least create a "place holder" but, ye cats, it has come down to this!

I don't know. I just don't know...

"Puppy In My Pocket"

I threw in the Oswald The Lucky Rabbit holding a dead fish, just for fun. Let's face it, I'm a fun-loving guy!

Mister Puppy's Playhouse

This week, Mariel has been deeply into the concept of a puppet show called, "Mister Puppy's Playhouse." The show stars one Mister Puppy who was formerly a doll with a computerized device inside of it that made it writhe and sing a Christmas song. When the computerized whatziz fell out, I stuck my hand inside of the corpse and turned it into a puppet! (Note: I got the dog's ears wrong in this drawing!)

In addition to Mister Puppy, the li'l one is also on a Betty Boop and Pudgy kick. (Pudgy is Betty's puppy!) Hence some quick father-daughter doodles:

Finally, we have a bizzaro-looking Betty Boop watercolor attempt. It may well be a copyright infringement on the "Ugly Betty" TV show. Well, it's implied, any way...

Felix... What A Concept!

As you can see, I still can't draw a character just standing there to save my life. As John K keeps saying, you need to master construction before you can do anything. Sigh... maybe in the next lifetime.

In the mean time, my daughter's latest artistic concept is to have FELIX THE CAT drawn flying an airplane over all the stores in Fayetteville, NC. I don't claim to understand "conceptual art" I only draw what I'm told to draw.

Puppets, Puppies & Veggies

Well, the daughter has been into Puppies, Puppets and Veggie-Tales this past weekend, so that had been the theme to our "art projects."

At left, is a sketch of one of her "Puppy In My Pocket" figures.

Cute. Three dreaded words on the packaging: "Collect Them All!"

Above, we find a watercolor rendering of her "Vincent Van Goat" puppet, from the "Baby Einstein Collection." Oh, yeah, "Collect Them All!" Except they seem to have disappeared from the stores' shelves!

And Here's another "Baby Einstein" puppet: "Bard, The Dragon!" Also, a crappy "Larry The Cucumber" from Veggie-Tales.

Meh. I guess this counts as statutory "fresh content" for my blog. So sue me, already! (Oh, no! Does that count as a "flippant remark" I wonder?)

Other business: I've removed the link to the Animationshow forum from my sidebar. This is a very good animation forum that, unfortunately, from time to time, gets hi-jacked by a couple of very rude trolls. So, rather than be tempted to click the link when I'm at my blog, I've removed it. I'll probably re-instate it some day soon, though. In the mean time, I've substituted the animated-news forum. Let's see what this group of cartoon nerds is like!

Daughter-Father Doodles

Ye cats, but this blog has turned into an on-line, virtual refrigerator door! And to prove my point, I give you:

Yessss! My three and a half year old daughter has created her first cartoon character! Let's give it up for Balloon Guy! I didn't even see her do this, it just sort of appeared on a piece of paper at the kitchen table. Looks like Mariel has been pulling some all-night storyboarding sessions. Off the books and for no extra pay, natch!

Here are a few of her old man's doodles, done for the Li'l Princess' amusement:
Yeah, we just got the new Woody Woodpecker DVD set (thanks to cartoonbrew.com) and Mariel's is completely addicted to the "Spook-A-Nanny" TV episode. That, and "Andy Panda playing the piano!"

She's on a collision course with an advanced case of "cartoon poisoning!"

I still have no time to do any Bliar studies. In fact, I've had to delete the "repeat" portion from the "lather, rinse, repeat" shampoo cycle. That's how strapped for time I am these days! Of course, when you have twelve hours of parenting to take care of, there's always time for some father-daughter doodles!

Mariel is going through a VEGGIE-TALES phase, so I tried to draw some for her. Bonus for Daddy - these characters don't have hands!

Old business: I did finally score that Popeye DVD box set! Actually, I only had to wait 24 hours, so it was no biggie. Mariel loves these Popeye cartoons, as well! I think she's learning to read by watching them, as she recognized the title card for "King Of The Mardi Gras" when it came on. Ah, just like Daddy... A proud Papa moment!

Roland "Doc" Crandall, that is! In honor of not scoring that Popeye DVD box set last night, I pulled out my copy of Leslie Carbaga's "The Fleischer Story" and tried copying a pose from the first-ever Popeye model sheet.

It's a very strange "balloon" construction, as seen on the left. Using these ovals, I then worked at drawing a finished figure, on the right.

My little daughter's "My Little Pony" fixation continues! We did a brief water color session last night, so I did this weird pony for her. Looks like a development sketch from the new John Water's My Little Pony cartoon show!

Well, Mariel finally got over her head cold (with a spectacular era-ache finish, I might add!)

With three consecutive Father-Daughter Days, there was not much room for any serious Blair work. I decided to doodle out some full figure sketches, instead of the disconnected floating heads that I tend to do.

The Little Puppet Boy is still a big hit in these here parts, so I tried doing some poses of him. They turned out very bad, in my opinion. I mean, what's with that ice cream cone pose? Where are the basic underlying shapes that form the body? (I did try to work on having a line of action and a silhouette, but geeze!)
Sunday, after church, we ran to the hated Mart of Wal for a few grocery items. Underneath a giant Crayola placard, they had boxes of crayons on sale. Twenty-four packs were going for twenty cents a pop. Mariel wouldn't stop obsessing about them, so being the indulgent Mr. Moneybags that I am, I caved in and bought her a box.

Vacation Pictures

Here are some father-daughter doodles from last week's vacation.

Notice the word balloon? Yep! Mariel came down with a big, old sinus infection on Sunday night (07/01). We had to cancel the modest plans we had made, so we spent the week at home with a sick/cranky 3-1/2 year old. Ah, bliss!

Mariel has developed a love for DROOPY cartoons! She really was into "Homesteader Droopy" which she calls "Baby Droopy." When she was crying because of her cold, six or so consecutive plays of "Baby Droopy" dried her tears. God bless you, Tex Avery!

She also likes "Dixieland Droopy" (which she calls "Disneyland Droopy"), "Three Little Pups", "Blackboard Jumble" and "Sheepherder Droopy."

The Li'l One is also into the "My Little Pony" thang. We bought her a pretty hefty pony coloring book. I created my own pony, "Poisonella!"

And, just to round things out, here is a page full of doodles featuring desecrated versions of famous and not-so-famous cartoon characters.

Trying To Keep My Hand In

It just hit me that I hadn't been working on drawing hands this week. I scribbled out a few at the breakfast table this morning, but I was clearly distracted.

It was a very "parenting-intensive" weekend. This means while there was little time for actual Preston Blair hand-drawing, there were many opportunities for Father-daughter doodling.

First up, are some pretty cool doodles from Mariel. Going left-to-right, we have a stream of bubbles, a cartoon character wearing a hat and a balloon! Awesome; my daughter, the cartoonist!
We also worked in a watercolor session. I tried to make a Winnie The Pooh, but it turned out kinda mutant. Inset are a couple of doodles I colored in with texthighlighters.

No big whoop. With any luck, I can get back to trying my hand at some more hands. Maybe they'll turn out handsome? Well, you gotta hand it to me for trying...

Hand Lesson #2

I did some more work on that hand during breakfast this morning. Since I was having trouble positioning the thumb, I paid special attention to the outline and negative space of the Blair example.

It seemed to help, as far as positioning went. I'll keep working on getting a better feel for the overall construction and proportions.

I just try to hack out a different expression whenever I can. I keep a couple sheets of paper handy near the kitchen table and the computer. This is all I can do right now...
I'm making an effort to work on the PRESTON BLAIR lesson that covers the subject of cartoon hands. The early results aren't promising, but I'll keep at it and let you see how I'm doing. Maybe later this week..?

Yep, my daughter & I had the ol' watercolors fired up on Friday. This is what I ended up with before her attention span crumbled. I also doodled out some more pencil doodles. As you can see I had varying degrees of results...

That one with the "cats eyes" really creeps me out!

May 15, 2006 I created this blog to post my first cartooning lesson from the PRESTON BLAIR book. You see, noted cartoon animator guy, JOHN KRICFALUSI had started his blog and was posting on-line drawing lessons, based on the book. An on-line community of eager bloggers sprung up and we attacked the lessons with much gusto. Many of us were committed to near-daily postings of our results (I hesitate to call it "progress!")

Well, it is a year later. My actual cartooning lessons pretty much derailed at the end of November, but for some reason I keep posting.

I guess it's what's called "inertia."

Anyhoo - happy birthday to my blog and thanks to everyone for their visits, comments, support and inspiration!

Mo' Faces

I kept my pencil busy doodling out more of these non-entities. John Kricfalusi indicated that he tries to never draw the same expression twice. This is an admirable goal and I have a teeny-tiny taste of how hard it is to do it, now.
(The idea is that most cartoon characters have a very limited palette of facial expressions and they are usually drawn with most generic, schematic representations of a basic face. that is, there's a single "happy face, a single "mad" face, a single "sad" face, etc.)

Oh well, at least I'm not inflicting more of those magic-marker father-daughter doodles on you kind folks. THE HELL I'M NOT!!!

Sorry, but Mariel is in a hard-core "Lady and the Tramp" phase right now. I'm not complaining, though. "My Little Pony" and her crew are really tough to sit through, lemme tell ya!

Remember that duck from yesterday's post? Well, here's a quick way to really see how crappy your work really is! Just flip your drawing and notice how asymmetrical and poorly laid out it is! Have a lookie-loo...

Ouch! See what I mean? The two eyes are completely off! They don't belong together. If you put your thumb over one of the eyes, the drawing looks passable. Take your thumb away and you'll see they are not matched up as far as size, tilt, etc.

I repeat, "Ouch!"

Awww... a cute li'l kitten!

A not-very-flattering portrait of my daughter. Those things sticking out of the right side of her head are snarls that she twists into her hair. Her nickname is "Wubby" which we bestowed on her as an infant. Wiggly + Chubby = Wubby. Get it?

I drew another duck using Mariel's colored pencils. (They were an Easter gift from Aunt Amy!)

"Draw a blue Pooh!" the daughter commanded. I complied. The color didn't scan very well, though.

This page kinda falls half-way between being an actual "lesson" attempt and another "father-daughter doodle."

Mariel's been hooked on the cartoon "Harebrained Hypnotist" for the last week or so. During one of the many showings, I tried to do some quick sketches of Elmer Fudd. Elmer's appearance changes drastically from cartoon-to-cartoon and from director-to-director. This is a Friz Freleng version. Maybe I'll try to capture a Chuck Jones and /or Bob Clampett design from the same period next. Or maybe not.

There's a family medical emergency exploding as I write this, so I may not be drawing and posting too much for the next few weeks. We'll see...

We pulled out a set of "washable" color markers the other day and had at it on some "shirt cardboard" as they use to call it:

Turns out they were "washable" in that if you washed them, there was no worry about the colors fading. My daughter drew all over her hand, which is how I found this out.

Then it was on to the water colors:

This is my attempt to paint "Ruff Ruffman" the host of "Fetch!" on PBS. I don't know how accurate it is, but Mariel recognized who it was supposed to be.

I started working on some more duck drawings from the model sheet and it just sort of, I dunno, devolved into this Manson-like fever-dream. Those unidentified Li'l ducklings always seemd to really hate Baby Huey. Then I had a few more minutes to doodle on Sunday, but I didn't have the model sheet in front of me, so this is what happened:

As you can see, I'm rusty! This is good practice at doing that "Tweety" kind of head construction. Still haven't nailed it, but I'm closer than I've ever been. With any luck I can work on refining it over the weekend.

Half-Hearted Stab

I think it was Kevin Langley who posted a "Baby Huey" model sheet on his blog. I liked the designs so much I printed it out and took it home for further study. Of course I had all of three minutes for this, broken up into roughly 13-second intervals, while "watching" the Li'l one. I want to go back to this sheet when I have some more time to spend on it, though. Also included is an aborted ostrich sketch and a cute puppy-head that I ended up drawing for Mariel's amusement.

And here are a couple more doodles of "Daddy" for anyone's amusement. I see this kind of stuff and I realise I haven't integrated the solid cartooning principles as laid down in the Blair manual. C'est la vie!

Actually this isn't a drawing of Tweety, so much as it is a drawing of a Tweety doll! My daughter has become an animated plush doll junkie! This one has a chip that plays a truncated version of "Do You Love Me?" while a Tweety voice spouts cartoon catch-phrases. Well, it entertains her!

Some more father-daughter doodles. It started out as an attempt to draw one of the owls from the Preston Blair book but then turned into a doodle session. Those are two of my daughter's hand puppets and, yes, "the last can of WHO Hash!"

Well, I've just about given up on doing any more "assignments" from the Preston Blair book, gang! My schedule is right in the proverbial "terlet" and regularly-scheduled drawing sessions just aren't happening.

That's not to say I haven't been drawing! Here's a deluxe page full of full-color father-daughter doodles that I like to call, "Draw Pokey, Daddy!"

There's an entry over at JohnKricfalusi's blog that I find both inspirational and depressing. Here's a taste:

There is a reason for learning all these basic drawing tools I've been talking about. Once you understand your basic tools, you'll want to do something with them.

By themselves they have no meaning unless you apply them to some purpose.

If you just fill up sketchbooks with floating characters that look neat, that's not really functional. That's good for showing your friends, and it's good if you are studying how certain things look, but it won't help you do an actual job.

That's the next step - using your skills to perform a function.

I've been aware all along that these here sketches and exercises are but a means to an end. But what end? I have no illusions of "running off to join the circus" as far as being a professional cartoon-drawer. But what do I ever intend to do with all his? Hmmm...

I've said before that I am happy that I am able to make better funny drawings for my own (and my daughter's) amusement. Maybe that's pay off enough?

Also, in the ebb and flow of life I've been able to wrangle next to no time for my drawing pursuits. But isn't that true of so many things? When was the last time I've gone bowling, golfing or even been out to a movie? Sigh.

I'll keep drawing and I'll keep posting, as I am able, though...

Strip It Down!

A trap I seem to fall into when trying to draw a character is that I get all worried about achieving a facial resemblance and then ignore everything else.

So what I'm doing here, is I'm forcing myself to work on the rough, underlying construction. I'm having a problem with the bottom of the pear-shaped body. Mickey's butt is coming out too big and I'm not attaching the legs correctly.

I'm going to work on this and see if it helps. I will fight the urge to make a pretty, "finished" drawing because, after all, it doesn't end up that way.

Mickey #4

Here's what I'm calling Mickey #4.

There's a little too much negative space, as indicated, but I feel it's an improvement over the too little space shown in my previous attempt.

Of course, the hand is still problematic. That'll be a whole 'nother lessons for me!

Something I did was scribble out a page of Mickeys over the past week or so. These were done without much thought or reference to the model sheet. Perhaps I was trying to get rid of all my bad Mickeys on one sheet of paper. I dunno. It was probably more of a hindrance than help. But the damage has been done and I'm here to share it with you, the blog-reading public!

Also, my daughter made two requests:

#1 - Draw Pokey!

#2 - Draw a balloon with the number "50" on it.

So I did!

TECHIE NOTE: I switched over to the "NEW" blogger this weekend. The result? The identities of all the nice folks who left comments since last Spring have been wiped out! WHY? WHO KNOWS? Sorry 'bout that.

I didn't do any cartooning last night. Instead, I stayed up 'way past my bedtime transferring a bunch of Black & White cartoons from VHS to DVD-R.

These were broadcast by the Japanese Cartoon Network and contain lots of silent and early sound era titles. The funny thing is, that lots of the "silent" cartoons were broadcast totally silent! No added music or SFX - just a static-filled dead track!

So, nerd that I am, I burned a CD-R of heavily-edited music tracks culled from some 78 RPM records and added them as a music bed whilst doing the transfers. Next thing I know, it's going on midnight and I have to get up at 5:15 am!

Guess I was "in the zone!"

Yep! This is all I did, drawing-wise, this New Years weekend.

"Draw Pew Bear with a balloon!" was my daughter's edict. (Sometimes she says "Pew" instead of "Pooh." It's kinda cute.)

I did make a concerted effort to draw full-figure characters instead of the usual array of floating heads. That should count for something.

Here are a couple Mickey Mice I cribbed from a 1938 Model Sheet (thanks, to klangley!) I'm pretty pleased, on the whole, because Mickey has always been a tough nut for me to crack. Click on the image to see a larger version.

Observations: I "flipped" my versions against the model sheet and saw lots of things that need tweaking, though. For instance, his snout is too big on the top drawing. The bottom drawing makes the Mickster look as if he's wearing a disposable adult undergarment.

Maybe I'll do more mouse-drawings this weekend to see if I can refine some of these poses and proportions. Will 2007 be the year of the mouse, I wonder?

Just Call Me "Rusty!"

...and not because I have red hair, either! My lay-off and non-application of cartooning principles has resulted in some really tough sledding for yours truly! I decided to grab a Disney art book and work on some full-figure thumbnails to try to re-sharpen my dulled skills (such as they were!)

I need to remember things like Line Of Action, Interesting Silhouettes, and most of all, et cetera! I'll keep working at this for the next little while and then try to get back on track with the actual lessons at hand.

I took a stab at copying a still frame from the Tex Avery cartoon classic, "King Size Canary." I figured I'd try a thumbnail sketch while "watching" my daughter on Friday. The results? Eeeew! Well, there's certainly plenty of room for improvement!

As noted, the line of action on the cat was bad to the point of non-existent. I drew a really quick doodle with a stronger L.O.A. next to it. Not good, but it'll be something to build on.

Well, that Thanksgiving break certainly dragged on! A housefull of welcomed guests overlapped by some pretty heavy bronchitis! The next lesson I'll be working on is number seven. This will entail my taking over control of the family entertainment system so I can still-frame cartoons and draw poses. More Rice

These are quite a bit different from the generic, circle-based cartoon animals at which I've been slogging away. The necks are so spindly, it's easy to make the heads look like novelty pencil toppers! (Collect 'em all!)

K-K-K-Katie Lesson - Part One

Well, I've started in on the "Katie Rice" lesson last night. I was expecting much worse. Much, Much Worse!

Looks like it's time to start working more with facial contours and LIPS!

I trod pretty lightly for a change, as, after all, I am but a doughy, middle-aged guy trying to draw like a young, elfin pixie. (Did I mention said pixie is an awesome cartoonist?)

EDIT: Here's one of the drawings I was working from. Katie mentioned that she exaggerated the mouth to illustrate how it sticks out from the head construction lines. Ouch! I guess this is why I haven't been posting the original examples along side my versions.

Note to self: Try to put some of this energy into your drawings, bwah!

Concentrate!

I don't know if anyone's noticed, but my posts have been getting progressively, oh, I don't know, sloppier?

When I started out blogging these lessons six months ago, I could count on my two-and-a-half year old daughter to take a nap every afternoon. And then in the evening, I'd have some additional time while Mommy put her to bed.

Well, the li'l darling is now almost three and the afternoon nap is a thing of the past. The evenings are not as free as they used to be and by the time it's Snookums' bed-time, Daddy is pretty well drained.

As a result, I can't seem to muster the energy and concentration needed to draw.

I'm not yet ready to throw in the towel, since I really like working on this project. I'll keep drawing and I'll keep posting. If things look kinda shaky, well, do not adjust your set. The problem's on this end.

With any luck I'll be able to start on the dreaded "Katie Rice" Lesson six very soon.

The Shadow Knows

Well, here's the silhouette of Bugs that I've been working up to. Turned out pretty decent, all things considered.

I didn't have much time for concentrated Blair-based exercises this weekend. I did scribble out this page of doodles, for what it's worth:

Another thing I did, but can't post, is draw on balloons all weekend! It helped to amuse my (nearly) three-year-old-daughter. Number one, she likes balloons. Number two, she likes Daddy to draw for her. Number three, it was fun! Try it some time. Get a bag of balloons and a Sharpie marker. The marker-on-latex feel as you draw is a treat, plus you get a nice, dark line. (Techie note: Inflate the balloon first!)

Piggy turned out pretty good, even if I did position his little trotters a little far apart. Also, it's kind of a "Bug Bunny" pose, so it fit in with my "Obsession of the Week!"

Speaking of which, I did a doodle of "that" pose and tried fitting Popeye into it. Why? Just for fun! Spinach? Carrots? It's all good!

Also, there's a doodle of Mr. Mouse. Kevin posted some MM model sheets on his blog and noted how hard it is to draw this character properly. AMEN, BROTHER!
